I'm passionate about designing products that not only serve a physical or utilitarian purpose but most importantly serve an emotional one. Since May 2025 I have been an Innovation and Technical Research Intern at Kontoor Brands (parent company of Wrangler, Lee and Helly Hansen).
During my time here I’ve had the opportunity to develop new apparel concepts, conduct consumer, market and textile research, collaborate with overseas manufacturers and industry partners, and participate in denim processing workshops.

Summer Project
Over the summer I explored Kontoor’s Innovation portfolio, synthesized trend insights, and led user and material research to redefine
consumer needs and design new creative apparel concepts leveraging both current and emerging innovations. 
At the end of summer, I compiled all of my insights and new concepts in an 80+ page document that we were able to print into a booklet. Due to NDA contract, I’m only able to share the research portion of the project, not the new concepts.&#38;nbsp;

Nurturing long-distance friendshipsAfter college


	Students seek out relationships for guidance, community, and balance. They have expressed that strong relationships benefit and influence them in multiple aspects of their college experience.

But what happens when friends part ways?


Friendships struggle against:

How do students navigate the college experience?How can we facilitate the discovery, pursuit and growth of enriching relationships?How are long-distance friendships nurtured?


Note:
We started our research very broad and throughout the process we were able to narrow down our focus area resulting in long distance friendships.


	Interviews&#38;nbsp;


Our initial interviews were focused on understanding the college student experience, specifically how people navigated this new environment.


Standout responses:

“The moment when I came to the main campus, I tried the Chinese restaurant, and met a lot of international students down there. I felt being at home”.


“Putting myself out there, I guess, because I wouldn't really do that in high school, but now I try to, like I made myself a goal to, like, join clubs and all that. It made me a lot of friends”.


Summary:


Relationships and communications were the most frequent topics our interviewers were mentioning.Students struggle with work-life balance, often prioritizing work over health.Having strong relationships, especially friends with similar interests/cultures, helps students’ sense of belonging, thus, improving their mental health and academic performance.For one questions asking “how did you figure everything out”, we found that new students normally reach out to people around them instead of technologies.Even if it was difficult, many students stepped out of their comfort zone to seek help or to meet new people.

We quickly realized that time and distance are big obstacles in friendships, so
we surveyed 38 people and asked them what they wish they could do with their long-distance friend.


“Bake, hike, coexist without zoom or having to put in effort, be silly, be spontaneous.”

Market Exploration


There are currently some products aiming to tackle this long-distance relationship area, for example:


Bracelets that vibrate.App that encourages water intake by competing with friends (not necessarily long distance).Shared lamps that change colors.Phones
The problem with these products is that messages are often vague,&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;they’re mainly targeted to couples. The less vague ones are often not meant to be carried around.
Phones have a variety of uses and are not relationship-specific, people want something that is catered more specifically to their relationships.

Sharing feature: Allows sharing of media.


Casual: Not time-consuming or requiring planning.


Accessible: Easy to reach and transport.


Ongoing: Friends can pick up where they left off.


	Concept Ideation
We knew we wanted to include a screen, a camera, and a button, as well as a simple companion app.
Our first inspiration was vintage TVs, so we kept the form boxy; however, we realized that it would be hard for friends to connect with this shape and to relate it specifically to their friendship.&#38;nbsp;

We changed the form language to a friendlier and more relatable character, symbolizing artificial proximity and reducing the time/distance barrier.

Brand collaborations offer an excellent opportunity to expand audience reach and attract new customers. However, many of them fail due to brand misalignment. With a focus on aligning missions and values, I designed collaboration merchandise for Bombas, a New York City based apparel company, and HelloFresh, a leading meal-kit provider. This project ensured that both brands’ identities were thoughtfully integrated to create a cohesive, unique and fun collection.

Bombas and HelloFresh complement each other well, with Bombas focusing on clothing equity and HelloFresh on food security, making them an ideal choice for a collaboration.


Bombas is an apparel company with a powerful mission: for every item purchased, one is donated to people experiencing homelessness.


Hello Fresh is a meal kit company that believes that “everyone deserves honest and delicious food”. Some of its initiative takle exactly this with projects to help underserved communities like LimeAid and Meals with Meaning.

Design + Marketing


Bombas is mostly known for their socks, the initial product that launched the company after the founders, Randy Goldberg and David Heath, realized it was the most requested item in homeless shelters. I worked on four sock designs and some silly sock puppet marketing graphics that blend the vibrant and energetic spirit of Hello Fresh with the comfort and attention to detail of Bombas.


These designs could be part of an exciting marketing campaign that raises awareness about current issues our communities are facing and empowers consumers to take action, all while enjoying the comfort and quality of their new socks.

Process Sketches
	

For this collection, I focused on using bright, vibrant colors inspired by fruits and vegetables to evoke a sense of freshness and energy. 

My goal was to ensure each of the four designs felt distinct and memorable, while maintaining a cohesive look across the collection through consistent color themes.

This approach not only celebrates the bright and colorful palettes associated with healthy food but also ensures visual harmony across all pieces.

I began the ideation process by sketching initial concepts in Procreate, allowing for quick exploration of different ideas and color combinations. Once the designs were refined, I moved to Adobe Illustrator to develop the final concept artwork and create polished marketing graphics, ensuring each piece was professionally presented. This workflow allowed me to balance creativity with precision, resulting in a collection that is both playful and unified.

	This project was heavily inspired by the natural resources of my hometown, Chinandega, Nicaragua. 
After considering multiple common crops and materials, I settled with sugar cane because of the significant amount of by-product&#38;nbsp;it produces, known as bagasse.

Another great contributor to my project was my old elementary school, Centro Educacional Mantica Berio. After learning about what hands-on activities are being implemented on children, I knew I wanted to tackle gardening.

	Problem:Hands-on learning is often not prioritized in school resulting in superficial implementation, which creates a disconnect between the student and the activity.&#38;nbsp;
Sugar-cane bagasse applications remain limited in Nicaragua. Bagasse is mainly used for bioenergy production, hindering its potential.
	

To identify these problems I had to conduct research, which consisted in a literary search, primary and generative research, and material exploration.


Research Goals
Understand students learning needs and current curriculum.Learn about bagasse and its applications.


	Literary Search&#38;nbsp;
I started out just learning more about sugar cane in Chinandega, what bagasse is and how it is used.
Bagasse is the resulting fiber from the extraction of sugar cane juice. This fiber is either discarded or used for energy production (in Nicaragua), making the processing of sugar cane sustainable.&#38;nbsp;

	Primary Research
Interviews:


I interviewed 3 elementary school students, a principal, and a Natural Science professor.&#38;nbsp;
Standout responses:“I would like to not write as much. We write a lot in every class except science. We planted squash and I liked it. I didn’t see them grow, we just planted them and left”.“I liked going to the school garden because we could each plant our own seeds. In my house I’m thinking about making a garden like my uncle and I would like to see how seeds grow”.
Students’ Highlights:

There is a disconnect between growing plants and learning because it’s hard for students to keep track of the growth.They all complained about how much they have to&#38;nbsp;write and&#38;nbsp;sit and about being bored.&#38;nbsp;They were able to recall experiments in detail.&#38;nbsp;They emphasized the importance of fun activities.


Principal and Natural Sciences Professor highlights:

School’s good at starting projects but they struggle following-up with them. 

“A complement to help the use of tools is ideal” (talking about gardening tools).


Generative ResearchI asked three more kids to draw the gardening tools they use and their ideal way of carrying them.This exercise helped me figure out that kids mostly use a shovel and rake and that they want something fun.

Why design a wearable tool kit?

	Materials I was considering

Paper and paper products are some of the most common uses for bagasse. At first I was considering making biodegradable pots, however, after shifting my focus to tools, I quickly started looking for other bagasse applications.Particle board can also be made from bagasse by compressing the fibers with resin, making a strong and durable material commonly used for furniture, in theory, this would be the tool’s material.Additionally, cordage can also be made from bagasse fibers resulting in something very similar to jute twine (which is what I used for the sheath). &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;


Product Criteria


Accesible: Kid’s size + strong grip.


Fun: Invites imagination and play.


Safe: Avoids elements that put students at risk.


Practical: Educational + useful

Cons of tool belts:

They get in the wayConstruction workers belts don’t work for garden tools (too bulky, tools don’t fit).Gardening tool belts&#38;nbsp;for children are floppy and don’t secure small tools as well, medieval inspired sheaths are toy like or DIY and most&#38;nbsp;cater to boys.

Children’s tools seem generally fine; however, they often lack sturdiness,&#38;nbsp;seem too child-like (kids want to use the real thing!), or present safety concerns.
Nicaraguan basket weaving influenced the construction of the tool pouch.

	Concept Ideation

At this point I knew I wanted to design a medieval inspired weaved sheath that could carry both a shovel and rake.
I ended up coming up with a nested concept where the rake could rest on top of the shovel’s surface to safely secure them and protect the clothes from dirt. 
The sheath would be diagonally positioned to allow room for the kid to move and bend down, as well as to imitate the way sword sheaths rest, encouraging play.

	Problem:
People with Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB) pick at their bodies and struggle to stop, impacting their physical and mental well-being.

Specific BFRB: Excoriation Disorder

US Statistics: Affects between %1.4 to %5.4 of American adults and it’s more prevalent amongst women.


Research Goals
● To better understand people’s skin-picking habits.● Learn about the causes of skin-picking habits, attempts to stop or reduce them, and consequences.General Research Questions

Targets the “Build Awareness Part” of the Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment, but the actual intervention part is through videos and chats with physicians.
Fidget Toys: Tangle Therapy, Fidget Rings, Squish balls, Mobius rings, bike chains, etc.&#38;nbsp;
Provide an intervention that is not directly related to automatic behaviors or what drives people to pick at their skin.&#38;nbsp;


	Primary Research
Interviews:


I interviewed five people that had BFRBs and one clinical psychologist that specialized in BFRBs because I wanted to include a field expert into my design process.

"Well, it's because of anxiety and it also makes me more anxious. So it doesn't help. It's like a double negative.”“Trying to be aware when I pick at myself and stopping the behaviour. I haven't really tried anything else. Being aware doesn't really help because I can't stop myself from doing it.”“I feel like rude. If I unconsciously do it and I realize there's other people watching, it makes me embarrassed.”

Survey:

I surveyed 56 people that were affected by skin-picking specifically after conducting the interviews, which allowed me to be more intentional about my questions and the multiple choice options.


Face and hands are the most common places people pick.

People with BFRB pick at their skin constantly in an automatic way.


Anxiety, stress, boredom and focusing issues are the most common triggers/causes.

Appearance concerns and markings are the most common negative consequences.


Coping mechanism and stress relief are the most common positive consequences, confirming the common triggers.Self-care/grooming and detail oriented activities and fidget toys were the most common effective solutions.

People don’t tend to seek for help or advice but are open to try strategies if they seem actually helpful.

Themes and Findings


	Stress and Anxiety

Most people reported stress and anxiety as the main causes and triggers for their picking behavior.

	Boredom and Focus

For many people, their picking behavior occurred in spaces where they were more likely to get bored or lose focus. 


	Appearance

People care about how they look, and their behavior affected not only their appearance but also their confidence.


	Automatic

Most people don’t realize they’re picking at their skin, and some, even if they do, have a hard time stopping. 


	Gratification

People reported picking at their skin to seek a feeling of gratification or because it was satisfying.


	Negative Cycle

Often, the cause and consequences are almost the same, contributing to a negative behavioral cycle that is extremely hard to stop.


	Product Criteria

I started doing material and product exploration and came across some interesting findings:
Chromogenic Materials - Thermochromic paint: Changes the surface color through temperature variation.
a. Cold activated colorants.
b. Body or Touch activated colorants.
c. High temperature activated colorants.

Tangle Therapy (Fidget Toy)- Medical Fidgeting device.

Volunteers are the back-bone of Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP). Unfortunately this amazing non-profit is struggling to recruit, attract, and retain them. 

My project consists of two main parts aimed at tackling this issue

:Developing the foundation of a Volunteer Ambassador Program.Helping jump-start and promote the Barks and Rec pilot program.&#38;nbsp;

Diving into the Problem


HARP is struggling to recruit new volunteers and to get current volunteers to continue to show up.

But why?


There are two main issues:


Time Commitment: Most volunteering opportunities require a 6-month commitment pushing away people with busier lifestyles.Lack of Awareness: Many people don’t know about existing volunteering opportunities around them.

Talking with HARPI had the opportunity to talk and collaborate closely with HARP, including talking to the director of marketing, vets, and foster and volunteer managers. 


Key Takeaways:


	There is a need to attract new volunteers and create deeper connections with volunteers they currently have.
	They introduced me to Barks and Rec and the possibility to collaborate on this pilot program.


	Larger dog breeds struggle more to get fostered and/or adopted. 
	The shelter is a stressful place that may cause behavioral issues on dogs, which is why they need plenty out-of-kennel time.


	Interviews&#38;nbsp;
For my initial interviews, I decided to reach out and talk to foster volunteers. The questions were focused on:


Understanding the current volunteer programs at HARP through the lens of different stakeholders like foster parents, managers, and vets.Learning about the different challenges that HARP’s volunteer program is currently facingIdentifying design opportunities within the volunteer program.

There is a cost that comes with fostering, not knowing how much the food is going to last.”

&#38;nbsp;“I thought about to be a volunteer to be a dog walker, but it’s a much harder longer process, and I have to commit to a specific time, which is hard for someone who works. It would be a little tough to take time out of my work week.”

&#38;nbsp;“Facebook group is really helpful and everybody understands what theyre going through.”

Barks and Rec is a field trip program designed for HARP dogs to get some time “out on the town” and away from their kennels for a day trip.


Volunteering can be intimidating, especially when it comes to fostering big dogs. Barks and Rec acts like an entry point, low commitment opportunity to delve into the volunteering world and make it more accessible for people with a busier lifestyle, to ultimately help as many shelter dogs as possible.

For Barks &#38;amp; RecFor brand consistency, I’d love to see the HARP dog icon incorporated into the design.In the text identifier, consider removing the period—perhaps replacing it with an exclamation point for more energy.It might be fun to use alternating colors from HARP’s brand palette for the text.&#38;nbsp; Volunteer AmbassadorsI really like the concept of a small, easy to read piece. Perhaps instead of a flow chart, maybe a table or grid? &#38;nbsp;For the logo, I’m unsure about the megaphone. Perhaps we could use our existing dog, cat, owl, and heart icons in a style similar to the HARP 365 or Wildlife Rehabilitation Center logos? Why Create a Volunteer Information Pouch?
To raise awareness!

Dog foster volunteers frequently take their foster dogs out for walks, often attracting attention and curiosity from people, especially younger adults who stop to ask questions or request to pet the dogs. These spontaneous interactions present a unique opportunity to spread the word about fostering and volunteer opportunities beyond the reach of social media.

To make the most of these moments, I designed a convenient pouch that attaches directly to a dog’s leash. Each pouch contains informative brochures about HARP and its volunteer programs. When someone approaches to learn more about the dog, the volunteer can easily share information and offer a brochure for them to take home. This simple, accessible tool helps foster volunteers become ambassadors for HARP, turning everyday walks into powerful moments of community engagement and outreach.

	A lot of competitors are band focused, some like Band Pencil are band management focused, others like sonicbids are not only band focused, but also agency and promoter focused from the business side. In other words, the competition is not catering to small local venues and artists, which are the ones that need the most help.

Each of our team members inteviewed one field expert, in other words, someone with a lot of experience and knowldege about our problem and solution area. Some of the experts we interviewed included:

The best thing an artist can do is have someone move for them; to study their work and present it. 

Trust and rapport are key factors in securing bookings and facilitating successful events. 


Venues do not typically care about whether the musician is actually good enough. Their potential for sale increase is the most important for the venue.The goal is to keep artists artists.

Many artists wait a day or even a week to get their cut of the door fees and ticket sales and they don’t know if the venues are being honest

Starting a business is more like running a marathon over a sprint- it’s a matter of survival. Throw every idea against a wall and see what sticks. Never try to force anything. 


Interviews with customers

Each of our team members inteviewed at least 5 potential customers to try to understand their priorities and how they made buying decisions. Some of these potental customers included:
- Singers
- Bands
- Student booking agent
- People that used to play gigs.
- Musicians
- Bars and restaurants with and without live entertainement.


Insights from customers:


Networking and presenting yourself is one of the hardest parts of booking gigs.&#38;nbsp;If an artist has a body of work that they can share it makes them seem competent and serious about their work.Venues tend to already have a set way of booking artists, but could use help in organizing all of their bookings.

Venues are looking for ways to create unique and memorable experiences that set them apart from competitors.Artists are looking to Facebook Groups and other online pages to find gigs now, but it has A LOT left to be desired.Artists are told they’ll be paid a certain amount and at the end of the day are undercut. Example: agreeing on $500 for their performance and getting paid $200.

	Venue Learnings

Find the app easy to use and fairly helpful to their businessVenue owners already have the network to book musicians, and get many inquiries from entertainers. Therefore, they would be using VEM more for the logistical features (schedule, payment, possibly messaging).

Like the scheduling feature of VEM as it keeps their bookings in one place.Wish that VEM could do an internal review to verify musicians’ profiles and reviews by other venues.Wish that bigger artists would be on VEM.Wonder if switching to VEM is worth it over just continuing the way they are


	Entertainer Learnings


They are really excited to have a tool that is so helpful coming to the market.They have lots of feature suggestions, including profile features, reviews, and ways musicians may connect with each other to create bands.

Like the secure form of paymentlike the layout of the app, it is streamlined and easy to use.Wish the design was a bit lighter in color and easier to see, more contrast.Wonder how we are going to market.Wonder how we are going to make reviews secure
